WestRock Bio

History

Established in 1991, WestRock Community Centre is located at  204 O'Connell Drive in the City of Corner Brook. The Centre serves a community of 241 social housing tenants with an approximate population of 657. While the units are owned and operated by Newfoundland and Labrador Housing Corporation, the centre addresses a variety of social , education and recreational needs within the community.

 

Mandate

The mandate of the WestRock Community Centre is to promote the health and social well-being of families and the community in which they live, and to help develop a better social environment through recreational, education and social programs.

 

Education

Education is a key priority for the WestRock Community Centre. These programs have helped foster and attitude of lifelong learning within the youth and adults of our community. Some of the programs are as follows:

  • Laugh Learn & Literacy
  • Teen Haven
  • Adult Basic Education Level I

 

Justice

Through our partnership with Youth Corrections Division of Western Health, along with community programs, we have seen a drastic reduction in youth petty crime in our area over the last six years. This is due to having the only Youth Centre in the City of Corner Brook. The Youth Centre is operated on a drop in basis and provides an alternative to inappropriate behavior.

 

Economic Development

The WestRock Community Centre is a heavily involved in ensuring that your and adults alike have an opportunity to work. We take advantage of government agencies to hire low income individuals and also have an Outreach Career Development Coordinator onsite. This individual offers help with resume building, job search skills, and interview skills. We offer the following in this area:

  • Job Creation Partnership
  • Tutor Work Experience Program & SWASP

 

Healthy Living

We believe that a healthy community must have healthily people. This is why we have introduced programs that support a healthy lifestyle. A fitness facility will be available to the community. Guest speakers host a number of topics throughout the year that correspond with programs and services. Some of these programs include…

Social

Social programs provide residents with opportunities to interact with their peers. The WestRock Community Centre and its partners take pride in the special events and social programs that are offered through the year. Some of these include.

Recreation

Recreation plays a key role in every child’s life. The WestRock Community Centre provides access to a range of sports equipment and recreational opportunities. The following are examples of some of our recreational programming:
